School Groups at Afterburn Fitness

Afterburn is a dynamic and versatile environment for students to have fun and learn through hands-on team building activities while also touching on a variety of different curriculum areas, such as physical education and science.

Our dragon boat package/experience directly connects to the Active Living Strand (B), Movement Competence Strand (C) and the Healthy Living Strand (D), in the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum as they are able to expand their physical activity library as well as learn and apply knowledge to their everyday lives (e.g., heart rate zones). To learn more about how dragon boat relates to school curriculum,  please click here

Our specialty is in training high performance paddling athletes indoors with our 22-person indoor paddling pool. Below are two half-day excursion packages that contrast between paddling specific interests and general fitness, as well as two recurring training packages. Packages can be customized depending on the desired teaching goals.  A swim-test is not required for pool activities as our pool is only 3 feet deep. School sports teams may also be interested in supplementing their season training with the unique strength training equipment at our facility or start their own dragon boat paddling teams.

Afterburn has worked with several TDSB schools and the dragon boat team of the Elementary Teachers of Toronto.

Check us out on BlogTo, CP24, Global and Bell.

Instructors are certified for Canoe Kayak, Dragon boat and/or general fitness.

Dragon Boat Team Training

The sport of dragon boat brings together people of all abilities and ages in a way unlike any other sport. Dragon boat requires 10 men and 10 women, one steers person and one drummer. Due to the sheer number of people required, many opportunities exist to contribute to the success of the team both on and off the water and each person is vested in each other to make the whole team better as each individual paddles on the same boat.

Andrew, the owner, has been paddling for over 20 years and started his paddling journey at York Mills Collegiate Institute, a TDSB school. His life has been positively impacted by the sport and would love to see it do the same for others. Afterburn provides off-water training and works with Sunnyside Paddling Club, a registered TDSB vendor to provide on-water training if desired to form an on-water team.

If you’re looking to start a team for your school for the first time, we’ll waive the first session facility fee and charge a coaching fee of $60 to try it out. An Afterburn provided coach is mandatory.

Subsequent sessions: Facility fee: $120 per session, Coaching fee (if required) $60

Typical Afterburn sessions are 1.25 hours long and include 15 minutes of warmup and briefing and 1 hour of paddling in the paddle pool.

A typical season for a TDSB school team would be 1-3 sessions at Afterburn to learn the stroke in a controlled environment and 5-7 sessions of an hour in duration on-water at Sunnyside Paddling Club to prepare for the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival mid-June.

Afterburn works with your student and teacher leadership to ensure all elements of your season are in place for maximum fun and positive lifelong memories.

Sport Specific Team Training

Most TDSB schools do not have a comprehensive weight training facility. From Cross-country to football, all sports benefit from some elements of weight training. Afterburn has both the instructors and the facility to elevate your team’s performance.

First trial session: Facility fee free

Facility Rate per hour: $50

Trainer rate per hour: $50 to $100 per hour depending on availability and expertise required
